How do you spend your long airplane flights? Me, I sometimes use them to get work done. But if I don't have anything pressing to do, I'll often pass the time by watching DVDs.

If you want a better option than the in-flight movie, all you need is your trusty laptop, a favorite DVD or two, and a good software DVD player. This setup not only lets you choose your entertainment, it also gives you the option of pausing, rewinding, or forwarding through the action whenever you want.

I did a little research and found two programs that are worth your time. Both cost around fifty bucks, but you get what you pay for. Try them out, and I'll bet those hours in the air will fly by.

DirectDVD helps you watch DVDs in style, with options for letterbox viewing, panning, and cropping. This program doesn't skimp on sound, either. You can choose from TruSurround XT, Dolby Digital, and Dolby Headphones settings, which are perfect for in-flight screenings. (Shareware/Windows)

PowerDVD offers great video and audio quality for your DVDs. It also provides features--such as multiple fast-forward and rewind speeds as well as high-quality still and frame captures--that give you more control over your viewing experience. (Shareware/Windows)
